"Why is the teaching of Latin composition necessary? Without it God cannot be known. Without it we are mired in damnation. Through Latin composition we weaken - no, overthrow - the empire of the devil. It is necessary for the salvation of our souls."
    Olaus Theophilus, headmaster, Copenhagen (1573)
